Emma Raducanu Secures First US Open Win Since 2021 Title Triumph
Emma Raducanu made a winning return to the US Open as she comfortably defeated qualifier Ena Shibahara 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour. The victory marks her first success at Flushing Meadows since her historic title run in 2021.
The 22-year-old British star, who stunned the world by lifting the trophy as a teenager four years ago, had suffered first-round exits in both 2022 and 2024. This time, however, Raducanu looked sharp and composed, showcasing strong serving and aggressive returns under the guidance of her new coach, Francisco Roig.
“It feels very special,” Raducanu said after the match. “It’s my first win here since 2021, so I’m really pleased. First rounds are always tricky, but I’m happy with how I came through.”
Raducanu’s quick victory also stands as the fastest win of her Grand Slam career. The British No. 1 will now face Indonesian qualifier Janice Tjen in the second round, after Tjen claimed her first-ever main draw win with a hard-fought three-set victory.
Raducanu enters this year’s tournament in solid form, having recently pushed world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to a deciding set in Cincinnati. She credits her improved confidence and consistency to the influence of Roig, a former coach of Rafael Nadal.
“I feel I have amazing people around me now, and that makes every day on court more enjoyable,” Raducanu added.
With momentum building, fans will be eager to see if Raducanu can produce another deep run at the final Grand Slam of the season.
