Emotional Venus Williams, 45, falls short of remarkable victory on US Open return

Venus Williams Shines at US Open Despite First-Round Exit

NEW YORK: At 45, Venus Williams reminded the tennis world that she is far from ready to retire. Competing at the US Open, Williams became the oldest women’s singles player since Renee Richards in 1981 and the third oldest in the Open Era.

Facing 11th seed Karolina Muchova, a semi-finalist last year, Williams pushed the Czech star to three sets before falling 6-3, 2-6, 6-1. The seven-time Grand Slam champion received a standing ovation as she waved to the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“I didn’t win today, but I’m very proud of how I played,” Williams said. “I haven’t played many matches recently, so I’m still finding my rhythm. The support from the crowd, here in the U.S. and around the world, was incredible.”

Among the spectators was sister Serena Williams, who shared on Instagram: “I am immensely proud of you @venuswilliams.”

Williams, back at Flushing Meadows for the first time in two years and 28 years after her first US Open final, showed flashes of her vintage game. Coming back from 0-40 in the third game, she soon delivered powerful backhands and competitive rallies, taking the second set 6-2.

Although Muchova ultimately prevailed in the deciding set, Venus’ performance was a reminder of her enduring talent and passion for the sport.

Williams, who prefers to play primarily in the United States, may not return to international competition until next spring. “My goal is to do what I want to do. I wanted to be here this summer, and I’m so grateful for the wild card,” she added.

Reflecting on her journey, Williams grew emotional, noting that she is finally free from illness and injury after years of challenges, proving that her love for tennis remains undiminished.
