Philippines Earthquake: Death Toll Rises to 69 as Rescue Efforts Continue
October 1, 2025
A devastating 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines on Tuesday, leaving at least 69 people dead and more than 150 injured as search and rescue operations continue across Cebu province.
The quake, which hit offshore late Tuesday, sent residents fleeing into the streets as buildings collapsed, roads cracked, and power lines snapped. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported nearly 800 aftershocks by Wednesday afternoon, including one measuring magnitude 6. Officials warned that more tremors were likely, though of lesser intensity.
Hospitals Struggling, Rescue Operations Underway
Medical centers near the epicenter have been overwhelmed, forcing the Philippine Coast Guard to dispatch a vessel carrying doctors, nurses, and essential supplies.
Local officials in Bogo City and San Remigio municipality confirmed that children were among the victims. Rescue teams are working through heavy rains and power outages, with many villages cut off due to landslides and flooding.
San Remigio’s vice mayor, Alfie Reynes, reported that several casualties occurred when a sports complex collapsed during a basketball game. She appealed for urgent supplies, including food, clean water, and heavy equipment to clear debris.
Widespread Destruction
Images shared by local media show toppled homes, cracked highways, and a century-old church reduced to rubble. In Pilar town, residents described the terror of waking their families and rushing outside as their houses shook violently.
Large parts of Cebu province, home to over 3.4 million people and a popular tourist hub, remain without electricity. Relief efforts are being led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, who has deployed cabinet ministers to coordinate aid and pledged swift government support.
International Response
The United States, India, Japan, Australia, and the European Union have extended condolences and offered assistance.
“We stand ready to support the Philippine government’s response as friends, partners, allies,” said MaryKay Carlson, U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines.
Safety Advisory
Authorities have urged residents to stay alert for aftershocks, avoid damaged buildings, and follow instructions from local emergency services. Travelers heading to Cebu and nearby provinces are advised to check with their providers and ensure their insurance covers natural disasters.
The Philippines lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity. The country’s deadliest recent quake occurred in 2013 on Bohol island, killing more than 200 people—close to the same area struck this week.
