Pakistani Film ‘Moklani – The Last Mohanas’ Makes History at Jackson Wild Media Awards
KARACHI: Pakistan has achieved a remarkable milestone in global cinema as “Moklani – The Last Mohanas” became the first-ever Pakistani film to win at the prestigious Jackson Wild Media Awards 2025, often referred to as the “Oscars of nature documentaries.”
The announcement was made by Jawad Sharif Films on Instagram, celebrating the historic achievement:
“Our film Moklani has become the first-ever Pakistani Feature Film Winner at the 2025 Jackson Wild Media Awards, celebrated worldwide as the Nature Oscars. We dedicate this award to the Mohana fisherfolk, to Pakistan, and to all indigenous communities whose stories and struggles inspire us to keep telling stories that matter.”
Directed and produced by award-winning filmmaker Jawad Sharif, the documentary was selected from over 500 international entries, a record-breaking number for the competition.
The film beautifully captures the story of the Mohana people of Manchar Lake, one of Pakistan’s oldest indigenous fishing communities whose traditional way of life is rapidly disappearing. Through powerful visuals and emotional storytelling, Moklani sheds light on how climate change and environmental degradation are threatening their centuries-old culture.
Produced by Jawad Sharif Films in collaboration with the National Geographic Society and Climate Kahani, the film blends art and advocacy to highlight the urgent need to protect both Pakistan’s cultural heritage and its fragile ecosystems.
Critics have praised Moklani – The Last Mohanas as a visually stunning and deeply moving tribute to resilience, tradition, and the human spirit in the face of climate challenges.
