Teachers Reject Mandatory Teaching License Policy, Announce Protests

Teachers’ associations across Punjab have rejected the government’s decision to introduce a mandatory teaching license for all categories of educators, warning of province-wide protests.

Representatives from the Punjab Teachers Union, Educators Association, and Headmasters Association said the policy raises concerns about the status of qualified teachers holding degrees such as CT, B.Ed, M.Ed, MPhil, and PhD.

Concerns Over Policy

Teacher leaders argued that introducing a licensing requirement despite existing qualifications reflects a lack of trust in the teaching community. They also criticized the move, stating that many policymakers were themselves educated by the same teachers now being evaluated.

The associations further warned that the education system should not be treated as an experimental framework and raised concerns about the future of public sector schools.

Protest Announcement

Teacher groups announced that protest demonstrations will begin next week if the policy is not reconsidered. They also expressed concern over reported reductions in teaching posts, which they described as damaging to the education sector.

Government Policy Details

Under the new framework introduced by the education department, teachers will be required to obtain a formal teaching license through tests and interviews. Failure to comply may result in removal from service within the current academic year.

The license system will be divided into three levels—Primary, Middle, and Secondary—based on academic qualifications and experience.

The certification will remain valid for five years and will require renewal based on additional criteria and applicable fees.

Ongoing Debate

The policy has sparked debate between education authorities and teacher associations, with discussions expected to continue as implementation plans move forward.
