Italy Fans React Coolly to Proposal of Replacing Iran national football team at the World Cup

Football fans in Italy have shown little enthusiasm for a suggestion that the Iran national team could be replaced by Italy national football team at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

The idea was reportedly raised by Paolo Zampolli, an Italian-American diplomat, who suggested the possibility during discussions involving global leaders and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. However, the proposal has no official backing from football authorities.

Italian officials were quick to dismiss the suggestion. Sports Minister Andrea Abodi stated that such a move is neither possible nor appropriate, emphasizing that teams must qualify through competition. Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti also criticized the idea, calling it unacceptable.

Football experts echoed similar views, noting that tournament qualification is based strictly on sporting merit. Coaches and analysts pointed out that any changes to participating teams would typically follow established rules rather than external proposals.

FIFA has already confirmed that Iran will take part in the tournament, reinforcing its stance that football should remain separate from political considerations.

Italy, a four-time World Cup champion, did not qualify for the tournament after losing in the playoff stage, marking its third consecutive absence from the competition.

Meanwhile, Iran has successfully qualified and is preparing for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The team is expected to proceed with its scheduled matches as planned.
