KP Government Steps Up Monsoon Preparedness to Reduce Flood Risks
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa authorities have intensified preparations ahead of the upcoming monsoon season to reduce the risk of flooding, infrastructure damage, and loss of life across the province.
Chief Minister Sohail Afridi chaired a high-level meeting on the provincial monsoon contingency plan, directing all departments to ensure full readiness and timely coordination. He emphasized that any negligence during emergency response would not be tolerated.
Emergency readiness and planning
Officials briefed the meeting that district emergency operation centers across the province will remain fully operational with round-the-clock staffing to respond to any situation.
The chief minister instructed relevant departments to complete vulnerability mapping of high-risk areas, conduct standard operating procedure (SOP) training, and carry out mock emergency drills before mid-June.
He also ordered verification of all rescue equipment, including boats, pumps, and heavy machinery, to ensure they are fully functional ahead of heavy rainfall.
Drainage cleaning and risk reduction measures
Authorities reported that large-scale drainage cleaning operations are underway across the province. So far, most identified drains have been cleared, and hundreds of kilometers of drainage lines have been cleaned to improve water flow during rains.
Encroachments blocking natural waterways are also being removed as part of flood prevention efforts.
Health and emergency supplies
The health department has been instructed to maintain sufficient stocks of essential medicines, including emergency fluids, anti-snake venom, and other critical supplies required during flood emergencies.
Emergency relief items such as tents, hygiene kits, blankets, and food supplies will be pre-positioned in vulnerable districts before the monsoon season begins.
Rescue services and public safety
Rescue 1122 teams have finalized their monsoon response plans, and water rescue points are being established in multiple districts. The government has also directed the completion of evacuation and first-response training for relevant staff.
Authorities will also launch public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about safety measures, evacuation procedures, and emergency helplines during heavy rains.
Safety measures in flood-prone areas
To reduce risks in sensitive regions, the provincial government has directed strict monitoring of rivers, glacial lakes, and rainfall patterns. Section 144 may also be enforced in flood-prone areas to restrict dangerous activities such as bathing and fishing during the monsoon season.
