Golden Knights Edge Hurricanes in Double Overtime Thriller to Take Series Lead
The Vegas Golden Knights secured a dramatic 5-4 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes in double overtime on Saturday night, taking a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup Final series.
Vegas appeared to be in complete control after building a four-goal advantage, but Carolina mounted an impressive comeback in the third period, scoring four unanswered goals to force overtime and silence the home crowd at T-Mobile Arena.
The game was finally decided at 5:38 of the second overtime period when Golden Knights defenseman Shea Theodore’s shot deflected off the skate of Hurricanes backup goaltender Brandon Bussi and crossed the goal line.
“It was a unique playoff game,” said Vegas head coach John Tortorella. “I’ve been involved in many postseason games, but this one stood out.”
One of the standout performers for Vegas was Mitch Marner, who recorded four points and delivered the fastest hat trick in Stanley Cup Final history.
With the win, the Golden Knights now hold a 2-1 series advantage. Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday night in Las Vegas after a two-day break.
Historically, teams that take a 2-1 lead in the Stanley Cup Final have gone on to win the championship in 46 of 57 instances, a success rate of approximately 80.7%.
