Zidane Iqbal Makes History as First Player of Pakistani Heritage at FIFA World Cup
Zidane Iqbal has made history at the FIFA World Cup 2026 by becoming the first player of Pakistani heritage to appear in a men’s World Cup match.
Iqbal, who plays for Iraq, came on as a substitute in the 59th minute during his team’s group-stage match against Norway, held in Foxborough, USA.
The midfielder, who previously played for Manchester United, was born to a Pakistani father and an Iraqi mother. His appearance marks a notable milestone for fans following football talent with South Asian roots.
In a post-match interview, Iqbal said he was surprised to learn about the significance of the achievement and shared that he immediately informed his family. He highlighted the importance of both sides of his heritage and the support he has received throughout his career.
Iqbal also mentioned that he carries symbols representing both Iraq and Pakistan as a sign of respect for his background and identity.
Despite Iraq’s defeat in the match, his participation has been widely noted as a historic moment in World Cup history and for Pakistani-origin athletes in international football.
