New Zealand Finish Strong After Early Setbacks at The Oval

Tom Blundell scored New Zealand’s first half-century of the series while Glenn Phillips produced an unbeaten knock to help the visitors recover on the opening day of the second Test against England at The Oval on Wednesday.

At stumps, New Zealand were 291-7 after being asked to bat first, putting together a much-improved performance following their defeat in the series opener at Lord’s.

Blundell Anchors the Innings

New Zealand found themselves under pressure at 107-4 before Blundell helped stabilize the innings with a series of important partnerships.

The wicketkeeper-batter scored 51 runs and shared an 81-run stand with Daryl Mitchell, who contributed 44. Blundell then added another valuable partnership with Glenn Phillips as New Zealand rebuilt their innings.

His knock came from 82 deliveries and provided the foundation for the visitors’ recovery before he was dismissed by Jacob Bethell’s left-arm spin.

Phillips Remains Unbeaten

Glenn Phillips continued New Zealand’s progress with an unbeaten 49, playing several confident strokes and ensuring his side maintained momentum late in the day.

He will resume batting on the second morning alongside Kyle Jamieson, with New Zealand aiming to push beyond the 300-run mark.

England Debutants Make Positive Impact

England’s bowling effort was shared among several players, including debutant fast bowler Sonny Baker, who impressed with two wickets in his first Test appearance.

Jacob Bethell also made a valuable contribution with the ball, claiming two wickets through his spin bowling.

Jofra Archer marked his return to the Test side with an energetic spell, while Matthew Fisher and Josh Tongue each picked up a wicket.

Competitive Opening Day Sets Up Exciting Contest

Earlier in the innings, Rachin Ravindra scored 33 and captain Tom Latham added 27, helping New Zealand build partnerships despite regular breakthroughs from the England attack.

The visitors finished the day in a solid position, while England will look to wrap up the remaining wickets quickly when play resumes.

With the series still in its early stages, both teams have plenty to play for as the second Test continues at The Oval.
