Islamabad to use drones for digital monitoring of Muharram gatherings
Islamabad authorities have announced enhanced security arrangements for Muharram processions and gatherings, including the use of drones for digital monitoring across the federal capital.
According to an Interior Ministry statement, all imambargahs, majalis venues, and procession routes have been geo-tagged as part of a wider security planning system ahead of Muharram.
A special mobile application named “Mehfooz Muharram” has also been launched, allowing citizens to report suspicious activities, security concerns, and incidents in real time. The app includes features such as live location sharing and image uploads.
Officials said a central control room has been set up at Safe City Islamabad, where monitoring and coordination will be carried out during religious events. A four-tier security cordon will also be deployed to ensure protection for processions and gatherings.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi directed law enforcement agencies to strengthen checking at entry and exit points of all gatherings and maintain a strong field presence throughout the period. He also emphasized coordination with religious scholars to maintain peace and order.
Authorities confirmed that a full security audit of all venues has already been completed, while traffic management plans are being finalized to avoid disruptions during processions.
The government reiterated a zero-tolerance policy against hate speech and provocative content, especially on social media, and said strict action will be taken against any violations.
Officials added that coordination meetings with religious leaders are ongoing to promote harmony and ensure peaceful observance of Muharram across the city.
