Uruguay Struggle in Opening Matches as Luis Suárez Watches from the Stands

Uruguay has made a disappointing start in the early stages of the tournament, with two draws leaving the team under pressure to secure qualification for the knockout rounds.

The two-time World Cup winners drew their opening matches against Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde. With a tough fixture against Spain still ahead, Uruguay now faces the risk of an early exit from the competition.

Former Uruguay star Luis Suárez was among the spectators watching the team’s recent match. The veteran striker, now 39, observed from the stands in Miami, close to where he currently plays for Inter Miami.

Suárez, Uruguay’s all-time top scorer with 69 goals in 143 international appearances, retired from international football in 2024 after a long and successful career. He was not included in the current squad selected by coach Marcelo Bielsa.

Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa expressed concern after the match, noting that his team failed to take full advantage of key moments during the game. He said the side began the second half in control but was unable to convert possession into decisive chances.

Bielsa added that the team lacked finishing ability in crucial moments, an area where Suárez had often made a difference during his international career.
