United States Defeat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 to Reach FIFA World Cup Round of 16

The United States booked its place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday, earning the nation’s first World Cup knockout-stage win in nearly 25 years.

Goals from Folarin Balogun and Malik Tillman secured the victory, although Balogun’s night ended with a second-half red card following a VAR review.

The hosts had to withstand early pressure as Bosnia and Herzegovina created several promising opportunities. Veteran forward Edin Džeko and Ermedin Demirović both tested goalkeeper Matt Freese, who made important saves to keep the match level.

The United States gradually grew into the game. Balogun had an appeal for a penalty turned down before later seeing a goal ruled out for offside.

The breakthrough finally arrived just before halftime. Captain Tim Ream won possession high up the pitch before Malik Tillman played a pass into Balogun’s path. The striker calmly finished to give the United States a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

The match changed in the 64th minute when Balogun received a straight red card after the referee reviewed the incident with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), reducing the hosts to 10 players.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, the United States remained organized defensively and continued to threaten on set pieces.

In the 82nd minute, Tillman doubled the lead with an excellent free kick from the edge of the penalty area, leaving the goalkeeper with little chance of making the save.

Bosnia and Herzegovina pushed forward during an extended period of stoppage time but were unable to find a breakthrough as the United States held on for a clean sheet.

The victory sends the United States into the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, where it will face Belgium on Monday, while Bosnia and Herzegovina’s tournament campaign comes to an end.
