Iga Swiatek and Alexander Zverev Advance to Wimbledon Third Round

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

Defending women’s champion Iga Swiatek and newly crowned French Open champion Alexander Zverev secured convincing victories on Thursday to book their places in the third round of Wimbledon.

Swiatek delivered a dominant performance, defeating former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova 6-1, 6-3 in just 70 minutes after overcoming a difficult opening-round match earlier in the tournament.

The Polish star looked far more comfortable in the second round, controlling the match from the start with powerful groundstrokes and consistent serving.

Speaking after the victory, Swiatek said she approached the match with a fresh mindset and focused on staying sharp throughout the contest.

She will now face Alexandra Eala of the Philippines, who made history by becoming the first Filipino woman to reach the third round of a Grand Slam tournament after defeating Maya Joint in three sets.

Other Women’s Singles Results

Last year’s Wimbledon runner-up Amanda Anisimova fought back to defeat fellow American Sofia Kenin in a three-set thriller.

Former Australian Open champion Madison Keys also progressed comfortably, defeating Britain’s Katie Swan in straight sets.

Zverev Continues Strong Form

In the men’s singles, Alexander Zverev produced another impressive display, defeating France’s Valentin Royer 6-1, 6-3, 7-6(3).

The German, who captured his first Grand Slam title at the French Open earlier this year, has traditionally found Wimbledon challenging but believes he is playing well enough to make a deep run in the tournament.

Zverev will be aiming to improve on his previous best performances at the All England Club after never advancing beyond the fourth round in earlier appearances.

More Players Advance

American Taylor Fritz continued his impressive Wimbledon form with a straight-sets victory over Patrick Kypson to reach the third round.

Australia’s Alex de Minaur also advanced comfortably after defeating veteran French player Adrian Mannarino in straight sets.

Spain’s Rafael Nadal completed a comeback victory over Pablo Carreno Busta after their second-round match resumed following a suspension caused by darkness the previous day.

Britain’s Arthur Fery also progressed after defeating Finland’s Otto Virtanen in four sets, keeping home hopes alive in the men’s singles competition.

Meanwhile, former Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova produced one of the biggest surprises of the tournament by eliminating French Open champion Mirra Andreeva in a hard-fought three-set match, ending the teenager’s hopes of winning back-to-back Grand Slam titles.
