Türkiye has called for global support for Palestine’s draft resolution submitted to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which demands an end to Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territories within 12 months.
During an emergency UNGA session, Turkish envoy Ahmet Yıldız emphasized the importance of the resolution, which was introduced by Palestine and co-sponsored by Türkiye.
“As a co-sponsor of the resolution and a committed advocate for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) proceedings, Türkiye views this session as both timely and essential,” Yıldız stated. He stressed that the resolution represents a collective movement within the international community to address long-standing injustices faced by the Palestinian people.
Highlighting the significance of the resolution, Yıldız noted that it is the first resolution presented by Palestine to the General Assembly and marks a critical step in their pursuit of justice. He explained that the draft aligns with the findings of the ICJ and the principles outlined in the U.N. Charter, urging member states to uphold these values.
Yıldız pointed out three key elements of the resolution: reinforcing U.N. Charter principles, taking a firm stance against violations of international law, and addressing the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
He also criticized the international community’s inaction on previous U.N. resolutions related to Palestine. “Türkiye has actively participated in the ICJ process, contributing both written and oral submissions to the advisory opinion,” Yıldız said, reaffirming Türkiye’s commitment to supporting a cease-fire, the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, and the recognition of a two-state solution for peace.
Yıldız called on the global community to enforce the standards it has set and to ensure that justice, even when delayed, will ultimately be achieved.
