Pakistan to Send First Astronaut to Chinese Space Station in 2026
Beijing – In a significant move toward strengthening Pakistan-China space and energy cooperation, Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal met with Chairman of the China Atomic Energy Authority and China’s Space Agency, Shan Zhongde, during his official visit to Beijing.
During the high-level meeting, Minister Iqbal proudly announced that Pakistan will send its first astronaut to the Chinese space station in 2026, marking a historic milestone in the country’s space exploration journey.
Strengthening Ties in Nuclear Energy and Space Research
The discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in nuclear energy and space sciences, aligning both with Pakistan’s broader national development vision.
Minister Iqbal praised the role of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in transforming Pakistan’s infrastructure and energy landscape. He highlighted successful projects like K-2, K-3, and C-5 nuclear power plants as symbols of growing strategic cooperation between the two countries.
New Era for Pakistan’s Space Program
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s space initiatives have seen a revival. The minister spotlighted the “Uraan Pakistan” program, aimed at promoting innovation in space sciences and technology.
He shared that three satellites have recently been launched in partnership with China, further showcasing the strength of the bilateral relationship.
Ambitious Goals and Technological Advancements
Minister Iqbal revealed plans for Pakistan’s first lunar mission by 2035, a task assigned to the country’s national space agency, SUPARCO.
He also highlighted the establishment of a Quantum Computing Center in Pakistan, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to keeping pace with emerging technological challenges.
Pakistan, he noted, offers a pool of highly skilled and cost-effective professionals, presenting an excellent opportunity for China to enhance mutual capabilities through knowledge sharing and technical cooperation.
Focus on Education and Future Talent
The minister stressed the need to expand educational opportunities for young Pakistani scientists through Chinese scholarship and exchange programs. He called for deeper research partnerships between CAEC, SUPARCO, and the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, with an emphasis on peaceful applications of technology.
