Daniel Dubois Parts Ways with Don Charles, Teams Up with Tony Sims
British heavyweight Daniel Dubois has ended his partnership with long-time trainer Don Charles and started working with renowned coach Tony Sims, BoxingScene can confirm.
Dubois, 27, turned professional at 18 under Frank Warren and quickly made a name for himself with his hard-hitting style. He captured the WBA ‘Regular’ heavyweight title in 2022 after defeating Trevor Bryan but recently lost his IBF heavyweight title to Oleksandr Usyk in July’s undisputed championship fight at London’s Wembley Stadium.
New Training Camp
After the Usyk loss, Dubois also brought in Sam Jones as an advisor and parted ways with assistant trainer Kieran Farrell. Leaving Charles marks the most significant change to his team, with Tony Sims – a veteran trainer who guided Anthony Joshua to the IBF heavyweight title and now works with Johnny Fisher – taking over.
Dubois has had four trainers in his eight-year professional career, including Charles, Shane McGuigan, and Martin Bowers. This is also his fourth trainer in under five years. Unlike his previous camps, Dubois is now training under Queensberry Promotions instead of Matchroom.
Career Highlights
Under Charles, Dubois rebounded from losses and secured major wins against Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic, and Anthony Joshua, reclaiming the IBF title before falling to Usyk in the rematch. Reports suggest distractions leading up to the Usyk fight may have impacted his performance, increasing concerns about his preparation and stability.
With Sims now leading his training camp, Dubois aims to regain focus and pursue another run at heavyweight glory.
