Rising Floodwaters Threaten Bahawalpur and Multan; Authorities Step Up Evacuations
Bahawalpur/Multan: Suburbs and rural areas of Bahawalpur and Multan are under threat as floodwaters in the Sutlej and Chenab rivers continue to rise.
Near Bahawalpur, the Sutlej is experiencing low-level flooding close to the Empress Bridge. Authorities fear that rural areas within 2β3 km of the riverbed, including a small industrial estate, could be inundated. Local administration, Rescue 1122, police, and civil defense are actively evacuating residents. Around 34 villages in Jalalpur Pirwala are expected to be affected, with five rescue points established and equipped with heavy machinery.
In Multan, rising waters in the Chenab River pose a serious threat. Officials warn that 800,000 cusecs of floodwater could pass through Head Muhammad Wala near the city, potentially affecting 12 villages in Qasim Bela, 49 in Saddar tehsil, and 27 rural areas of Shujabad. Up to 400,000 residents may need evacuation.
Multanβs administration has intensified efforts, using mosque announcements and other communication channels to warn residents. City Police Officer Sadiq Ali Dogar and Deputy Commissioner Waseem Hamid confirmed that up to 138 villages could be affected and said the authorities are ready to breach Head Muhammad Wala and Shershah if water levels rise further.
To support evacuees, 39 tent villages have been established with medical staff, veterinarians, and food supplies deployed in the affected areas.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge residents to follow evacuation orders for safety.
