Pakistan Likely to Miss Wheat Production Target Despite Improved Output

 Apr 15, 2026

Pakistan is expected to fall slightly short of its wheat production target for the 2025–26 Rabi season, according to estimates presented at a meeting of the Federal Committee on Agriculture.

The country is projected to produce around 29.31 million tons of wheat, which is about 1.24% below the official target of 29.678 million tons. The shortfall is mainly attributed to a reduction in the cultivated area, which stood at 9.385 million hectares, compared to the planned 9.648 million hectares.

Despite missing the target, the overall outlook shows improvement. Wheat production is still expected to increase by 3.13% compared to last year, when output reached 28.42 million tons.

📊 Provincial Contribution

  • Punjab: 22.040 million tons
  • Sindh: 4.402 million tons
  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: 1.411 million tons
  • Balochistan: 1.450 million tons

The meeting was chaired by Rana Tanveer Hussain, where estimates for other crops were also reviewed.

🌾 Other Crop Outlook

  • Potato production is expected to reach 12.171 million tons, showing a 23.2% increase
  • Gram (chana) output may rise significantly by 52.4% to 262,030 tons
  • Tomato production is projected to decline by 11.9%
  • Onion output is also expected to decrease slightly

🌱 Future Targets and Water Availability

For the 2026–27 Kharif season, the committee has set targets of:

  • Cotton: 9.64 million bales
  • Rice: 9.17 million tons

Water availability is estimated at 67.451 million acre-feet, although soil moisture levels in key agricultural areas remain under pressure due to earlier dry conditions.

Officials also noted that seed and fertilizer supplies for the upcoming crop cycle are expected to remain sufficient, supported by local production and existing urea stocks.
