NAB Investigation Highlights Alleged Irregularities in Abbottabad Phosphate Mining

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has reported significant financial losses linked to alleged irregularities in phosphate mining activities in Kakul, Abbottabad.

According to NAB officials, the investigation was initiated following complaints from local residents regarding phosphate extraction in forest areas. After conducting a preliminary inquiry, the bureau decided to proceed with a formal investigation.

NAB’s findings indicate that phosphate mining operations took place between 2010 and 2018 in areas that included forest land. The bureau estimates that between 175,258 metric tons of phosphate were extracted from 2010 to June 2025, with an estimated value ranging from Rs. 740 million to Rs. 848 million.

Investigators have also raised concerns about the environmental impact of the mining activity, including reported damage to Guzara forests. NAB further stated that a mining licence issued in 2018 is being reviewed to determine whether all relevant legal and regulatory requirements were met.

According to the bureau, the alleged losses include unpaid royalties, taxes, and other government dues. The case has been filed under the Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2010, and proceedings are expected to be heard by the Accountability Court.

The allegations remain subject to judicial review, and the court will determine the outcome of the case based on the evidence presented during trial.
