Pakistan Proposes Rs. 1.29 Billion for Manned Space Mission

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has proposed an allocation of Rs. 1.29 billion for Pakistan’s manned space mission under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) for 2026–27.

According to budget documents, the total approved cost of the project stands at Rs. 2.19 billion. Officials estimate that around Rs. 900 million will have been spent by the end of the current fiscal year, while the remaining allocation is planned for the next phase of development.

The initiative is part of Pakistan’s broader efforts to expand its space capabilities under the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO). The programme includes work on satellites, space research, and future exploration projects.

Pakistan’s human spaceflight plan gained momentum following a cooperation agreement with China signed in 2025, under which Pakistani astronaut candidates are expected to receive training for missions linked to China’s space station programme.

Two candidates have already been shortlisted after completing initial medical and technical evaluations and are expected to undergo further advanced training.

Officials say one of the trainees may eventually participate in a future mission, which could mark a historic milestone for Pakistan’s space programme.

While the project remains at an early stage, it is part of long-term efforts to develop scientific and technological capacity in the country’s space sector.
