England Set New Zealand 254-Run Target in Thrilling Lord’s Test

LONDON: England set New Zealand a target of 254 runs to win the opening Test at Lord’s after being bowled out for 226 in their second innings on the second day of an action-packed contest.

Wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith played a crucial role in England’s recovery with a valuable 39 runs after the hosts suffered a dramatic middle-order collapse. Debutant opener Emilio Gay was England’s top scorer with a composed 57.

New Zealand fast bowler Nathan Smith delivered an outstanding performance, claiming six wickets for 70 runs and recording the second five-wicket haul of his Test career.

England appeared well placed at 126-2 before losing four wickets for just one run, slipping to 127-6. Jamie Smith and Gus Atkinson then helped stabilize the innings with an important seventh-wicket partnership.

Earlier in the match, New Zealand were dismissed for 113 in their first innings, leaving them needing 254 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

England’s bowling attack was led by Ollie Robinson, who marked his return to Test cricket with impressive figures of 5-39. Robinson’s early breakthroughs put New Zealand under pressure as the visitors lost several key wickets cheaply.

Kyle Jamieson provided resistance for New Zealand with an unbeaten 38, helping his side avoid an even lower total.

The match remains finely balanced heading into the next phase, with New Zealand requiring 254 runs and England needing wickets to secure victory in the series opener at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground.
