Golden Knights Struggle to Close Games in Stanley Cup Final Despite Strong Season Record

The Vegas Golden Knights, who were among the NHL’s most reliable third-period teams during the regular season, have recently faced unexpected challenges in holding late-game leads during the Stanley Cup Final against the Carolina Hurricanes.

In Game 2 in Carolina, Vegas saw a two-goal advantage slip away late in the third period. The situation became even more dramatic in Game 3, when a four-goal lead was erased before the Golden Knights eventually secured a 5-4 win in double overtime on Saturday night.

Despite these setbacks, the victory moved Vegas within two wins of claiming their second Stanley Cup in four years.

During the regular season, the Golden Knights finished with the league’s best goal differential at plus-47. Their strong defensive structure and ability to close out games carried into the playoffs, where they held a plus-10 goal differential before Game 2.

However, the back-to-back late-game comebacks by Carolina have raised questions about whether these recent collapses are isolated incidents or a growing concern for the team.

Head coach John Tortorella addressed the situation after Game 3, saying it is part of playoff hockey and not a major concern for the team at this stage.

“There are a lot of things that happen in playoff hockey,” he noted. “We are not worried about it.”

The Golden Knights will now look to regain control of the series as Game 4 approaches in Las Vegas, where maintaining late leads could become a key factor in deciding the outcome of the championship.
