PMD Forecasts Below-Normal Monsoon Rainfall Across Most of Pakistan

PMD Forecasts Below-Normal Monsoon Rainfall Across Most of Pakistan

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast below-normal monsoon rainfall in many parts of the country during the June to August 2026 season, while temperatures are expected to remain above average in several regions through September.

According to the PMD’s seasonal outlook, most areas of Pakistan are likely to receive less rainfall than usual during the monsoon period. However, some northern regions, including Gilgit-Baltistan, parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, may experience near-normal or slightly above-normal rainfall.

The department also expects higher-than-average temperatures across much of the country, particularly during the July to September period. Northern Punjab and western areas of Gilgit-Baltistan are among the regions likely to experience warmer conditions.

Potential Impact on Agriculture

Weather experts have noted that reduced rainfall could affect soil moisture levels and increase irrigation requirements for Kharif crops. Rain-fed agricultural areas may face additional challenges if rainfall remains below seasonal averages.

Officials emphasized the importance of efficient water management and agricultural planning to help minimize the impact of changing weather conditions on crop production.

Flood and Landslide Risks Remain

Despite the overall forecast of below-normal rainfall, the PMD has cautioned that localized heavy rainfall events can still occur during the monsoon season.

Northern mountainous regions may face risks associated with glacial melt, including Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), flash floods, and landslides. Increased glacier melt combined with seasonal rainfall could also contribute to higher water levels in parts of the Indus River system.

In urban areas, short periods of intense rainfall may lead to water accumulation and localized flooding, particularly in low-lying sections of major cities.

Health and Environmental Concerns

Meteorologists have also highlighted that higher temperatures and humid weather conditions during the monsoon season may create favorable conditions for the spread of certain seasonal illnesses. Public health experts often recommend preventive measures and awareness campaigns during such periods.

The PMD advised citizens, farmers, and local authorities to stay informed through official weather updates and take appropriate precautions throughout the monsoon season.

As weather patterns continue to evolve, authorities will closely monitor conditions and provide regular forecasts to support disaster preparedness, agriculture, and water resource management.
