Jewellers Protest FBR Raids, Observe Partial Shutdown Across Pakistan
Jewellers across Karachi and several other cities observed a partial shutdown on Tuesday in protest against repeated raids by Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officials over taxation-related issues.
The strike call was issued by the All Pakistan Sarafa Gems and Jewellers Association (APSGJA), which also suspended the issuance of daily gold rates due to the halt in trading activity.
Trading Disrupted in Key Markets
Jewellery markets in Karachi saw reduced activity as many traders kept their businesses closed. Similar shutdowns were reported in parts of Hyderabad, Nawabshah, and Peshawar.
The association said the protest was intended to draw attention to ongoing tensions between jewellers and tax authorities.
Jewellers Raise Concerns Over Taxation
Speaking at a press conference in Karachi, APSGJA President Qasim Shikarpuri said jewellers are facing pressure from the FBR regarding increased taxation demands.
He claimed that bullion traders are being asked to pay significantly higher taxes, which the association considers unfair, stating that many traders are already compliant with tax requirements.
Call for Resolution
Jewellers have urged the authorities to resolve the issue through dialogue and to ensure a fair and transparent taxation process for the industry.
The association said continued pressure could further disrupt trading activity in the jewellery sector if concerns are not addressed.
Officials from the FBR have not yet issued a detailed response regarding the latest protest.
