Saudi Arabia Introduces New Occupational Health Screening Requirements for Workers

Saudi Arabia has announced a new occupational health framework that will require workers in various sectors to undergo medical fitness assessments and screening for non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

According to guidelines issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, the initiative will be implemented in phases across the country.

Phased Implementation Plan

In the first stage, job applicants will be required to complete health examinations before starting employment. These medical assessments must be reviewed and approved by an occupational health specialist before a candidate is cleared to begin work.

In later stages, the program will gradually expand to include existing employees, starting with high-risk industries before extending to other sectors.

Coverage Across All Sectors

The new requirements will apply to both public and private sector organizations, as well as non-profit institutions. The policy will cover permanent staff, temporary and seasonal workers, trainees, individuals with disabilities, and remote employees.

Employment and Fitness Standards

Under the framework, individuals who do not meet the required occupational health standards may be reassigned to suitable roles or may not continue in their current position, depending on medical evaluation and workplace requirements.

Workers may also be given the opportunity to undergo additional assessments to demonstrate their ability to perform specific job duties.

Ongoing Health Evaluations

In addition to pre-employment screening, occupational health checks may also be required in cases such as workplace injuries, occupational diseases, job role changes, or routine periodic evaluations based on job risk levels.
