Jannik Sinner Overcomes Early Challenge to Begin Wimbledon Title Defense with Victory

Defending Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner overcame a tough first-round test to defeat Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic in five sets and advance to the second round of Wimbledon 2026.
The world No. 1 recovered from a two-sets-to-one deficit to secure a 4-6, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-3 victory after three hours and 28 minutes on Monday.
Sinner also dealt with a minor foot injury during the match after slipping on court. Despite visible bleeding, the Italian received treatment and continued playing before completing the comeback.
Following the match, Sinner said the injury was not serious and expressed confidence that it would not affect his preparations for the next round.
The 24-year-old is aiming to defend his Wimbledon title and capture his fifth Grand Slam championship. He will next face Portugal’s Nuno Borges in the second round.
Sabalenka Advances in Straight Sets
Women’s world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka made a strong start to her Wimbledon campaign with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Serbian qualifier Teodora Kostovic.
The four-time Grand Slam champion completed the match in just over an hour and will now take on American McCartney Kessler in the second round.
Sabalenka, who is seeking her first Wimbledon title, said she was pleased to return to the All England Club and looked forward to the challenges ahead.
Opening Day Produces Notable Results
The opening day of Wimbledon also featured several surprising results.
Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew defeated Maja Chwalinska in three sets after recovering from a set down, while Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz eliminated Norway’s Casper Ruud in straight sets.
Russia’s Roman Safiullin earned a hard-fought five-set victory over compatriot Andrey Rublev, and American fourth seed Jessica Pegula progressed to the second round with a straight-sets win over Darja Vidmanova.
Meanwhile, Japan’s Naomi Osaka attracted attention with a traditional kimono-inspired outfit before her opening match, where she advanced with a straight-sets victory over France’s Elsa Jacquemot.
With several top players successfully progressing, Wimbledon 2026 has begun with a mix of expected results and early surprises as the tournament moves into the second round.
