PCB to Hold Four-Team ODI Tournament Ahead of 2027 World Cup Preparations

Sports Correspondent: Imran Sohail

he Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced plans to organize a four-team One-Day International (ODI) tournament in August as part of its preparations for the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

The tournament is expected to take place before the start of Pakistan’s domestic first-class season and is aimed at evaluating players and strengthening the national ODI squad ahead of the global event.

Focus on Building the World Cup Squad

Pakistan’s Director of High Performance, Aaqib Javed, said the tournament will provide selectors and coaches with an opportunity to assess the country’s leading white-ball cricketers in a competitive environment.

He noted that with approximately 18 months remaining before the 2027 World Cup, the board considers this an important stage to begin long-term planning for the tournament.

Four Balanced Teams to Compete

According to Aaqib Javed, the event has been jointly planned by the national selection committee and coaching staff.

The tournament will feature four balanced teams, with Pakistan’s leading white-ball players expected to participate. Team combinations and playing XIs will be selected according to the specific roles assigned to players, allowing the management to evaluate different combinations and identify the most suitable options for future competitions.

Televised Matches for Player Evaluation

The PCB official added that all matches in the tournament will be televised, enabling selectors, coaches, and fans to closely follow player performances throughout the competition.

The event is expected to help the management assess form, consistency, and team combinations as it works toward building a strong player pool for upcoming international assignments.

Long-Term ODI Objectives

Aaqib Javed also emphasized the importance of improving Pakistan’s standing in international ODI cricket ahead of the 2027 World Cup, stating that the team’s long-term objective is to strengthen its performance and compete among the world’s leading ODI sides.
