Pakistan’s Population Could Reach 400 Million by 2040, Health Minister Warns

Pakistan’s population could rise to 400 million by 2040 if the current growth rate continues, Minister of State for Health Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Bharath has said while emphasizing the need for greater public awareness and responsible family planning.

Speaking at a ceremony held at the Basic Health Unit in Tarlai, the minister said that maternal and child healthcare, along with family planning, should remain a national priority to support sustainable development and improve public health.

Dr. Bharath encouraged families to carefully consider their ability to provide children with essential needs, including proper nutrition, education, immunization, healthcare, and a supportive upbringing before making family planning decisions.

He noted that ensuring every child has access to basic rights is essential for building a healthier and more prosperous society.

The minister also highlighted that the use of modern family planning methods in Pakistan remains lower than in several other countries, adding that increasing awareness and access to reproductive health services can help improve health outcomes.

He said that limited use of family planning methods may contribute to unintended pregnancies, placing additional pressure on the healthcare system and affecting maternal health.

Dr. Bharath urged citizens to make informed and responsible family planning choices for the well-being of future generations.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health said that China, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has provided Pakistan with reproductive health medicines, medical supplies, and equipment worth $2 million to support healthcare services across the country.
