Rugby Borough Council to Honor Local Olympic and Paralympic Medalists
Rugby Borough Council is set to award the Freedom of the Borough to local athletes who competed in the recent Paris Olympics and Paralympics. This prestigious honor will be presented at a civic reception celebrating their achievements.
Among those recognized will be Kimberley Wood, who won bronze medals in women’s slalom K1 and kayak cross. The council has decided that all future medal winners will also receive this esteemed accolade automatically.
Maggie O’Rourke, Portfolio Holder for Partnerships and Wellbeing, emphasized the importance of acknowledging the hard work and determination of these athletes. “It is vital for Rugby to celebrate and honor those who represent our borough on the world stage,” she stated.
“Our council is proud of its sporting heritage and committed to celebrating these achievements as part of our dedication to our town.”
The council looks forward to learning more about the athletes’ experiences and their future plans. Michael Moran, the Council Leader, expressed hopes that this initiative will contribute to a broader sporting legacy. “These celebrated Olympians and Paralympians are just the beginning,” Moran said.
“With our focus on expanding sport and participation throughout the borough, we aim to build on this success and inspire even more achievements.”
