A new scientific study has raised concerns about extreme heat conditions during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

The analysis, conducted by climate research experts, suggests that a significant number of matches could be played in conditions that exceed recommended safety thresholds for both players and spectators.

According to the findings, nearly one-quarter of the 104 scheduled matches may take place in heat levels considered risky under international sports safety guidelines. In some cases, conditions could become severe enough that match delays or postponements may be required.

The study assessed heat stress using the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index, which measures how effectively the human body can cool itself in hot and humid environments.

Football’s global players’ union has also expressed concern, warning that rising temperatures could impact player performance and fan safety during the tournament.

Officials recommend cooling breaks and hydration pauses when temperatures rise beyond safe limits, while more extreme conditions could require additional safety measures or scheduling adjustments.

FIFA has said it is aware of the risks and has prepared mitigation strategies, including hydration breaks, cooling systems at selected venues, and enhanced medical support during matches. The organization emphasized that player and fan safety remains a top priority.

However, experts note that several stadiums—especially those without full air-conditioning—may still face significant heat challenges, particularly in cities expected to experience high summer temperatures.

Some researchers have suggested that future tournaments in affected regions may need to be scheduled during cooler periods of the year to reduce health risks and ensure better playing conditions.

The study highlights growing concerns about climate-related challenges in major global sporting events and the need for long-term planning to protect athletes and fans.
