Mariners’ Josh Naylor exits after at-bat in third inning vs. White Sox

Josh Naylor Exits Early with Shoulder Soreness as Mariners Edge White Sox in Extra Innings

Seattle Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor left Thursday’s matchup against the Chicago White Sox in the third inning due to shoulder soreness, according to Mariners manager Dan Wilson.

Naylor appeared to be in discomfort during his first at-bat when he grimaced after swinging at a high, inside fastball from White Sox starter Shane Smith. Although he stayed in to finish the at-bat, which ended in a strikeout, he was noticeably uncomfortable. He later grounded out to second base to end the third inning and did not return to the game.

Mariners Complete Sweep with Extra-Innings Win

Despite the injury concern, Seattle came out on top, defeating the White Sox 4-3 in 11 innings to complete a three-game series sweep. The win provides positive momentum for the Mariners as they continue to push in the second half of the season.

Naylor’s Season So Far

Naylor, acquired by Seattle at the trade deadline from the Arizona Diamondbacks, has been a valuable addition. He’s currently batting .289 for the season with 14 home runs, 65 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases. Since joining the Mariners, the left-handed slugger has a .261 average, along with three home runs and 10 stolen bases.

This isn’t the first time Naylor has dealt with shoulder discomfort this year. While with Arizona, he was removed from a June 23 game — also against the White Sox — due to right shoulder soreness, though he managed to avoid the injured list and returned to play shortly after.

Solano Steps In at First Base

Following Naylor’s exit, veteran Donovan Solano took over at first base for Seattle. It was Solano’s first appearance in two weeks, stepping in during a crucial stretch for the team.

The Mariners will monitor Naylor’s condition closely as they aim to maintain momentum in the tight playoff race. Further updates on his status are expected ahead of the weekend series.

Cricket West Indies Calls Emergency Meeting to Revive Test Cricket Legacy Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced an emergency strategic intervention following a challenging Test series against Australia, aimed at revitalizing the team’s long-format performance. In response to the recent series defeat, CWI President Kishore Shallow has convened a special meeting of the Cricket Strategy and Officiating Committee. To provide expert insight and guidance, he has invited three of the region’s most celebrated cricket legends—Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, and Brian Lara—to join the discussions. These icons will collaborate with existing committee members Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Desmond Haynes, and Ian Bradshaw. “To strengthen the discussions, I have extended invitations to three of our greatest batsmen ever: Sir Clive Lloyd, Sir Vivian Richards, and Brian Lara,” Shallow said in a recent statement. Together, the trio brings decades of experience and nearly 28,000 Test runs. Their involvement is intended to offer both inspiration and practical solutions to help guide the next chapter of West Indies cricket. “This engagement is not ceremonial. These are men who helped define our golden eras,” Shallow explained. “Their perspectives will be invaluable as we shape the next phase of our cricket development. We intend for this gathering to result in tangible, actionable recommendations.” While the recent series outcome has prompted reflection within the cricketing community, CWI emphasized the importance of maintaining a forward-looking approach. The board remains committed to long-term planning and rebuilding a strong, competitive Test team. West Indies cricket has seen significant success in the T20 format, but the rise of shorter formats has presented challenges for the traditional Test arena. CWI hopes that renewed focus and expert input will help bridge this gap and encourage greater interest and preparation for red-ball cricket. The strategic meeting is expected to produce a roadmap focused on resilience, performance development, and fostering a renewed culture of excellence. With leadership from some of the game’s greatest Caribbean players, West Indies cricket aims to build a future rooted in its proud and storied legacy
