US Open Round 1 suspended due to heavy fog, play resumes after two-hour delay

SHINNECOCK HILLS: The opening round of the 2026 U.S. Open was disrupted on Thursday after thick fog forced officials to suspend play at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

Play was halted shortly after the first tee shots when visibility dropped significantly across the course. The suspension was announced at 7:05 a.m. ET as conditions made continued play unsafe.

At the time of the stoppage, only a small number of players had completed their opening holes, with scoring still at an early stage.

After a two-hour delay, officials confirmed that play resumed at 9:05 a.m. ET, with practice facilities also reopened for players during the break.

Weather forecasts indicated a possibility of changing conditions throughout the day, including a chance of rain, thunderstorms, and wind gusts reaching up to 30 mph, which could further impact play.

The U.S. Open has previously experienced weather-related delays, including a fog interruption in 2021 at Torrey Pines.

Despite the setback, tournament officials expect play to continue as scheduled once conditions improve, with players continuing their pursuit of early positioning in the championship.
