Government Advances Plans for Kharian-Rawalpindi Motorway Project

The federal government has made significant progress on the proposed Kharian-Rawalpindi Motorway (M-13), a major infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity and reducing travel times between key cities in Punjab.

The 117-kilometer motorway project, estimated to cost around Rs. 205 billion, is expected to provide a faster route between Lahore and Rawalpindi, shortening the travel distance by approximately 100 kilometers compared to the existing motorway network.

According to official sources, the Public Private Partnership Authority (P3A) Board of Directors recently reviewed the project and agreed in principle to move forward with the next stage of development. The proposal is expected to be submitted to the federal cabinet for final consideration.

Officials noted that the project is considered strategically important for regional transportation and economic activity. Once completed, the motorway is expected to improve travel efficiency, support trade and enhance connectivity between major urban and commercial centers.

The National Highway Authority (NHA) informed the board that the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) is already involved in nearby motorway projects, which could help facilitate a smoother implementation process.

The project received approval from the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) earlier this year and is planned under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model.

Under this framework, detailed arrangements regarding financing, toll operations, concession periods and project management will be finalized in accordance with relevant laws and approved procedures.

Transportation experts believe the motorway could play an important role in strengthening Pakistan’s road infrastructure network while improving mobility for commuters and commercial traffic.

If approved and implemented as planned, the Kharian-Rawalpindi Motorway will become another major addition to the country’s expanding motorway system, supporting economic development and regional connectivity in the years ahead.
