Islamabad to Enhance Security During Muharram with Drone and Digital Monitoring

Islamabad authorities have finalized a comprehensive security plan for Muharram processions and religious gatherings, incorporating modern surveillance tools such as drones and digital monitoring systems to ensure peace and public safety during the holy month.

The decision was taken in a high-level meeting chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, where officials reviewed security arrangements for the federal capital.

According to the Interior Ministry, geo-tagging of imambargahs, majalis venues, and procession routes has already been completed. A central control room has also been established at Safe City Islamabad to monitor all activities in real time.

As part of the initiative, the government has launched a mobile application named “Mehfooz Muharram,” which allows citizens to report suspicious activities, security concerns, and incidents. The app also supports live location sharing and image uploads to improve coordination between authorities.

Security measures will include a four-tier cordon around processions and religious gatherings. Officials have been directed to strengthen checking at entry and exit points and ensure smooth traffic management during events.

The Interior Minister emphasized strict implementation of the code of conduct and called for a zero-tolerance policy against the spread of provocative content. He also stressed close coordination with religious scholars and event organizers to maintain harmony.

Officials reported that security audits of all processions and gatherings have been completed. Additionally, Aman and Nigehban committees have been activated to support law enforcement agencies.

Authorities said more than 15,000 personnel, including Islamabad Police, Rangers, and other security agencies, will be deployed throughout the city. The security plan will remain active from the beginning of Muharram until the 19th of Safar.

In total, over 170 processions and around 930 religious gatherings are expected to take place in Islamabad during Muharram. To strengthen monitoring, more than 3,000 CCTV cameras will be used for real-time surveillance, while over 500 traffic police officers will manage traffic flow.

Security agencies have also intensified search and combing operations across the capital as part of preventive measures against any possible threats.
