Jen Pawol Makes History as First Woman to Umpire in Major League Baseball
NEW YORK — A new chapter in baseball history is being written this weekend, as Jen Pawol becomes the first woman to umpire a Major League Baseball game.
The 48-year-old trailblazer from New Jersey will take the field during the Miami Marlins vs. Atlanta Braves series at Truist Park. She’s scheduled to work the bases during Saturday’s doubleheader and will be behind the plate on Sunday, according to an announcement by MLB on Wednesday.
Breaking Barriers in Baseball
“This historic accomplishment is a reflection of Jen’s hard work, dedication, and love of the game,” said MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred in an official statement. “She has earned this opportunity, and we’re proud of the strong example she’s setting — especially for women and young girls who dream of roles on the field.”
Pawol’s promotion follows years of commitment, including experience in spring training games in both 2024 and 2025. She becomes the fifth new umpire to debut in MLB this year.
A Positive Shift in Pro Sports
The milestone comes nearly three decades after the NBA broke its gender barrier for game officials, and over ten years after the NFL hired its first full-time female referee. While FIFA’s World Cup has featured female referees, the NHL has yet to include women as on-ice officials.
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised the move, saying, “Baseball’s done a great job of being completely inclusive. I’ll be watching. It’s good for the game.”
A Step Forward for Equality in Sports
Pawol’s debut represents more than just a personal achievement — it symbolizes progress and inclusion across the world of professional sports. Her presence on the field this weekend sends a powerful message that baseball is a game for everyone, both on the diamond and behind the scenes.
