FIFA Unlikely to Ban Israel Despite International Calls

FIFA, the global governing body of football, is unlikely to take action against Israel in its official competitions, despite increasing appeals from various groups and federations. The development follows recent remarks from FIFA President Gianni Infantino at a Council meeting in Zurich.

Infantino emphasized that while football cannot resolve international disputes, the sport has a responsibility to promote peace and unity across borders.

“At FIFA, we are committed to using the power of football to bring people together in a divided world,” Infantino said. “Our thoughts are with all those affected by conflicts. The message football should carry is one of peace and unity.”

He further explained that FIFA’s role is not to intervene directly in political matters, but to uphold values of togetherness, culture, education, and humanity.

Growing Pressure on FIFA

Calls for Israel’s suspension have grown in recent months. Human rights organizations, along with football federations from countries such as Norway and Turkey, have urged FIFA and UEFA to take measures similar to those imposed on Russia in 2022 after the Ukraine conflict.

Palestinian Football Federation President Jibril Rajoub has also been in Switzerland this week, lobbying for disciplinary action.

Despite this, analysts believe FIFA is unlikely to proceed with a suspension. Infantino maintains strong ties with global leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, whose administration has expressed support for Israel’s continued participation in international sport.

Israel in World Cup Qualifiers

Israel remains part of the ongoing FIFA World Cup Qualifiers and retains a chance to secure a spot in the global tournament next year.

Observers note that the contrasting treatment of Russia and Israel has sparked debates about consistency in global sports governance. However, FIFA insists its priority is to keep football as a platform for unity rather than division.

As Infantino reiterated, “Football’s power lies in its ability to bring hope and connection. That is the message the world needs most today.”
