Liverpool Fall 2-0 to PSG in Champions League Quarter-Final First Leg

 April 9, 2026

Liverpool FC suffered a 2-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final, with the scoreline arguably flattering the visitors after a difficult night in Paris.

Defensive Approach Falls Short

Liverpool adopted a highly defensive strategy from the start, appearing focused on securing a goalless draw to take back to Anfield. The team lined up with five defenders, including Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté, forming a deep defensive line.

Despite their cautious setup, PSG found an early breakthrough when Désiré Doué scored in the opening minutes, putting immediate pressure on the visitors.

Limited Attacking Threat

Liverpool struggled to create chances throughout the match. They failed to register a shot on target and saw very little possession, highlighting the challenges they faced against PSG’s dominant performance.

The home side continued to control the game and doubled their lead in the second half through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, further strengthening their position in the tie.

VAR Decisions Provide Relief

Liverpool benefited from a couple of key decisions involving the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), which helped prevent the scoreline from widening. A penalty decision against Konaté was overturned, while another potential penalty incident was not awarded.

These moments allowed Liverpool to stay within reach heading into the second leg.

Still Hope for Second Leg

Despite the disappointing performance, Liverpool remain in contention with the return leg set to be played at Anfield. A 2-0 deficit is challenging but not insurmountable, especially with home advantage.

However, the team will need a significantly improved performance to turn the tie around.

What’s Next

Liverpool now shift focus to their domestic campaign, where they are set to face Fulham FC in the Premier League. A strong result will be important to rebuild confidence ahead of the crucial second leg against PSG.
