Pakistan’s National Assembly Becomes First AI-Enabled Parliament

National Assembly of Pakistan has officially become the country’s first AI-enabled legislative body following the launch of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Parliament module and an AI-powered Speaker’s Office at Parliament House.

The initiative was introduced during a soft launch ceremony led by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and developed by the National Information Technology Board. It aims to modernize parliamentary operations through artificial intelligence, paperless workflows, and secure digital systems.

Government Push Toward Digital Governance

Speaking at the event, Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had launched a broader digital transformation drive across government institutions, encouraging a shift toward paperless administration.

She noted that the National Assembly had already implemented an e-Office system and was now taking another step by integrating AI-based tools into its workflow.

Focus on Efficiency and Reduced Paper Use

Officials highlighted that the parliamentary system produces a large volume of printed documents, particularly during budget sessions. The new AI system is expected to reduce paper usage and improve efficiency by digitizing documents and making them accessible electronically.

Shaza Fatima Khawaja also stated that while the transition to digital systems may create initial challenges, it is expected to significantly improve transparency and administrative performance in the long run.

Expansion of AI Tools in Parliament

Speaker Ayaz Sadiq said that the AI assistant will help improve research quality, legislative work, and overall parliamentary efficiency. He also mentioned plans to develop a dedicated AI data center for the National Assembly, with work expected to begin after budget approvals.

He added that future budgets may be provided in fully digital format, reducing reliance on printed materials and distributing documents via secure digital devices.

Parliamentary Digital Milestone

Chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on IT Syed Amin Ul Haque called the launch a historic step, stating that all lawmakers will benefit from AI-powered tools in their legislative work.

He also emphasized the importance of secure digital communication systems and praised ongoing government efforts to strengthen e-governance and digital infrastructure in Pakistan.
