Govt Ordered to Revisit Auto Policy As Small Cars Are Becoming More Expensive, Luxury Cars Cheaper

National Assembly Committee Criticizes High Import Duties on Small Cars, Urges Relief for Middle Class

The National Assembly Standing Committee on Commerce on Monday raised concerns over inconsistent and burdensome import duties on vehicles, particularly affecting small cars that are essential for middle-income families in Pakistan.

🚗 Concerns Over Import Duty Disparities

Committee member Shaista Pervaiz Malik pointed out a troubling trend: while small cars have become more expensive, larger and luxury vehicles have seen duty reductions, making them relatively more accessible.

“It makes no sense that vehicles meant for the average citizen are more heavily taxed than high-end models,” she said.

📊 Import Duty Breakdown

Here’s how current import duties stack up:

  • Up to 850cc (small cars): 55% duty

  • 1300cc vehicles: 65% duty

  • 1800cc vehicles: 75% duty

  • Large/luxury vehicles: Still face a 50% regulatory duty, after a 90% reduction under the new tariff policy (previously 200%)

Committee Chairman Javed Hanif urged the government to address the imbalance in the upcoming auto policy, emphasizing the need to lower prices of small cars to support the working and middle class.

🟡 Ban on Gold Jewelry Exports May Be Lifted

The committee also reviewed the current ban on gold jewelry exports, which was implemented via FBR SRO in May and remains in effect until June 30.

Officials from the Ministry of Commerce confirmed that a summary has been sent to the Prime Minister seeking approval to lift the ban, potentially reopening a key revenue stream for exporters.
