Lahore Turns Slaughterhouse Waste into Renewable Energy with New Biogas Project
Lahore is set to turn animal waste from slaughterhouses into affordable biogas, thanks to a new initiative by the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC).
Under the ‘Waste to Value Project’, LWMC will process thousands of tonnes of abattoir waste each day, transforming it from landfill material into renewable energy.
According to LWMC spokesperson Omar Chaudhry, pilot operations have already produced 25,000 kilograms of biogas daily, with plans to convert 1,000 tonnes of offal, intestines, and dung into energy each day once fully operational.
The project is expected to generate 275,000 tonnes in carbon credits and bring in $4.2 million annually by rehabilitating a former waste disposal site. In addition to biogas, the facility will produce a nutrient-rich byproduct usable as fertilizer for gardens and landscaping.
The LWMC plans to expand similar projects to other districts under the Suthra Punjab campaign, benefiting Lahore’s network of government and private slaughterhouses, including the Punjab Agriculture and Meat Company complex in Shahpur Kanjran.
