Microsoft Tests Major Windows 11 Taskbar and Start Menu Upgrades

Microsoft is testing new customization features for Windows 11, including a resizable taskbar, smaller taskbar icons, and improved Start menu controls.

According to reports from BleepingComputer, the new changes are part of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26300.8493 and are currently available to testers.

More Flexible Taskbar Design

The updated taskbar introduces several long-requested customization options. Users will now be able to reduce the size of taskbar buttons and reposition the taskbar to different areas of the screen, including the bottom, top, left, or right.

Microsoft design official Diego Baca said the ability to move the taskbar has been one of the most requested features by users since the launch of Windows 11.

He also noted that the smaller taskbar option provides more screen space for applications and does not require restarting the system or signing out.

Start Menu Gets New Customization Controls

The Start menu is also receiving additional customization options. Users will be able to disable recommended content and adjust the overall layout and size of the menu.

Microsoft explained that the new controls are designed to give users more flexibility. For example, those who prefer a minimal layout can disable recommended and “All apps” sections, while others can keep the full experience enabled.

However, recently installed apps will still appear in the Start menu to help users discover new software through the Microsoft Store.

Improved File Suggestions and Profile Options

The update also improves how files are displayed in the Start menu, aiming to show more relevant items at the top based on user activity.

In addition, users will soon have the option to hide their name and profile picture from the Start menu for a cleaner interface.

More Windows 11 Improvements Coming

Beyond the taskbar and Start menu changes, Windows 11 is expected to receive further improvements, including reduced notifications, simplified settings, and fewer system reboots during setup.

Microsoft is also working on enhancing Windows Search to provide a more consistent experience across the Start menu, taskbar, File Explorer, and system settings.
