Mohammad Amir Reportedly Becomes Eligible for IPL After UK Citizenship
Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has reportedly become eligible to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after obtaining British citizenship and a UK passport.
The development gained attention after Amir reshared a social media post referring to his updated nationality status. The left-arm pacer had previously stated that he could consider playing in the IPL once eligible.
According to reports, the 34-year-old acquired British citizenship through his marriage to UK national Narjis Khan.
Last year, Amir discussed the possibility of playing in the IPL during a television appearance, saying he would be open to joining the league if given the opportunity.
He also mentioned that he would prefer to play for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Former Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad had also commented that Amir’s experience could strengthen the franchise’s bowling lineup.
Mohammad Amir was part of Pakistan’s title-winning squads in the 2009 ICC T20 World Cup and the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.
Although reports suggest he may now qualify to play as a British citizen, Amir has previously stated that he does not plan to represent England in international cricket and remains committed to Pakistan.
Pakistani players have not participated in the IPL since 2008 due to political tensions between Pakistan and India.
Former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood remains the only Pakistan-born player to feature in the IPL while holding British citizenship.
