Lens Win First-Ever French Cup After 3-1 Victory Over Nice
RC Lens made history by winning the French Cup for the first time, defeating Nice 3-1 in an exciting final at the Stade de France on Friday.
The victory capped off a strong season for Lens, with star striker Florian Thauvin playing a decisive role by scoring and assisting in a landmark performance.
Strong start gives Lens control
Lens took the lead in the 25th minute through Thauvin, who continued his impressive cup run by scoring in the quarterfinal, semifinal, and final stages.
Just before halftime, Odsonne Édouard doubled the advantage with a header from a Thauvin corner, putting Lens firmly in control of the match.
Nice fight back but fall short
Nice responded quickly with a goal from Djibril Coulibaly, briefly reducing the deficit and raising hopes of a comeback.
However, Lens restored their two-goal cushion in the second half when Abdallah Sima scored to secure the 3-1 win and confirm the historic cup triumph.
Historic achievement for Lens
The victory is a major milestone for Lens, who also enjoyed a strong Ligue 1 campaign but narrowly finished behind Paris Saint-Germain in the league standings.
Coach Pierre Sage’s side was praised for its balanced squad of young talent and experienced players, which proved key in their successful cup run.
What’s next for Nice
OGC Nice endured a difficult end to the season and will now face a crucial promotion/relegation playoff to determine their Ligue 1 status.
