Pirates Strike Unusual Deal: Signed Bat Traded for Rookie’s First Home Run Ball
The Pittsburgh Pirates found a creative way to celebrate a milestone moment after rookie outfielder Esmerlyn Valdez hit his first Major League home run during a 4–1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in Toronto.
Valdez, recently promoted from Triple-A Indianapolis, had struggled early in the game but broke through in the sixth inning with a two-run home run off pitcher Chase Lee. The ball traveled into a standing-room section beyond right field, where it was initially collected by a fan.
Bullpen Steps In to Retrieve Historic Ball
After realizing the importance of the moment, the Pirates bullpen quickly stepped in to negotiate the return of the historic ball.
Reliever Justin Lawrence began discussions with the fan, using signals to coordinate a unique trade with the dugout.
Signed Bat Used in Exchange Deal
As part of the agreement, Valdez signed a bat, which was delivered to the bullpen by teammate Dennis Santana. The bat was then used as part of the exchange for the home run ball, allowing the rookie to secure a keepsake from his first career homer.
The unusual but light-hearted deal highlighted the team’s effort to preserve a memorable moment for the young player while also acknowledging the fan’s role in the event.
The incident added a unique twist to the game, turning a routine home run into a memorable story both on and off the field.
