France bans smoking on beaches, in parks and bus shelters

France Introduces Nationwide Smoking Ban in Beaches, Parks, and Public Spaces

PARIS: Starting Sunday, France will enforce a nationwide ban on smoking in several public outdoor areas, including beaches, public parks, gardens, and bus shelters, as part of a broader effort to protect public healthโ€”especially that of childrenโ€”from the harmful effects of passive smoking.

The decree, officially published in the governmentโ€™s legal bulletin on Saturday, also prohibits smoking outside libraries, swimming pools, and schools. However, electronic cigarettes were not mentioned in the ban.

Violators of the new smoking restrictions will face a fine of โ‚ฌ135 (approximately Rs44,849).

๐Ÿ›‘ Protecting Children From Secondhand Smoke

French Health and Family Minister Catherine Vautrin emphasized the importance of the new regulations, stating:

โ€œTobacco must disappear from places where there are children. Children have the right to breathe clean air.โ€

This move aligns with Franceโ€™s growing commitment to combat smoking-related illnesses and encourage healthier public spaces.

๐Ÿช‘ Whatโ€™s Exempt From the Ban?

Notably, cafรฉ terraces are excluded from the ban, allowing patrons to continue smoking in designated outdoor seating areas of restaurants and cafes.

๐Ÿšจ Why It Matters

Tobacco use remains a major public health concern in France, with an estimated 75,000 tobacco-related deaths reported each year. This ban marks a strong step in reducing exposure to harmful secondhand smoke and promoting a smoke-free environment for families and children.

๐Ÿ“Š Public Support Growing

A recent survey reveals that 62% of French citizens support smoking bans in public places, reflecting strong national backing for healthier shared spaces.

Franceโ€™s new regulation joins a growing list of global initiatives aimed at reducing tobacco use and encouraging smoke-free lifestyles. With stricter controls and public support, the country moves closer to its goal of a tobacco-free generation.
