Sindh Approves 500 Electric Buses for Karachi and Hyderabad
The Sindh government has approved the procurement of 500 electric buses as part of efforts to improve public transportation and reduce traffic congestion in major cities across the province.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority board chaired by Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. Several important projects aimed at modernizing urban transport systems in Karachi, Hyderabad, and Sukkur were reviewed during the session.
Under the approved plan, 450 electric buses will operate on 25 routes in Karachi, while 50 buses will serve five routes in Hyderabad through a public-private partnership model.
The board also approved the construction of a modern heavy vehicle terminal outside Karachi on the Northern Bypass for trucks, trailers, and other heavy transport vehicles. A dedicated track connecting Karachi Port to the Northern Bypass will also be developed to help separate heavy traffic from the city’s main roads.
Officials said the initiative is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve commuting facilities, and support environmentally friendly transportation in Sindh.
In addition, five modern EV depots will be established across the province, including four in Karachi and one in Hyderabad, to support the growing electric bus network.
