Health experts have warned that the ongoing heatwave across Pakistan may significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, including heatstroke, particularly for people exposed to high temperatures for extended periods.
According to medical professionals, heatstroke is a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention. They noted that the severity of outcomes often depends on how quickly treatment is provided, with early intervention greatly improving recovery chances.
Experts advised that individuals working outdoors during peak daytime hours are at higher risk and should take necessary precautions to avoid direct exposure to extreme heat.
Symptoms and Warning Signs
Health specialists outlined several common symptoms of heatstroke, including:
- High body temperature
- Dizziness and weakness
- Severe headache
- Confusion or disorientation
- Hot, flushed skin
- Slurred speech or unusual behavior
They emphasized that anyone showing these symptoms should be moved to a cooler environment and taken to a healthcare facility immediately.
High-Risk Groups
Doctors identified infants, elderly individuals, outdoor workers, and athletes as the most vulnerable groups during extreme heat conditions. These individuals are advised to take extra precautions to prevent dehydration and overheating.
Preventive Measures
Health experts recommended several safety measures, including staying hydrated, wearing light and breathable clothing, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and taking regular breaks in shaded or cool areas.
They also advised parents and caregivers never to leave children unattended in parked vehicles, even for short periods, due to the rapid rise in internal temperatures.
